Portrait Photographer Derren Lee Poole

Our photos of Derren Lee Poole’s photography submission really do not do any justice to his work.

“When asked what type of photography I do, I often will just say gig photographer. It’s an easy description that most people will understand straight away and will get a measure of. Actually though, if you study my work more closely, you’ll notice I’m really portrait photographer, I just happen to take my portraits in a music performance environment rather than a studio.” (https://www.facebook.com/phunkography)

“I Wish I Could Talk In Technicolor.” With Artist Joanne Chase Mattillo

Artist Joanne Chase Mattillo has sent us a submission from her recent body of work, meant as a tribute to 1960′ pop artists, with reference to 1950’s housewife who was a volunteer in early LSD experiments.

“Joanne has been a photographer since the early 1990‘s.  In 2000, she received a MFA in photography from California State University, Los Angeles.  Her subjects vary between nature, people, and architecture.  She searches for the mysterious in the mundane for her photographs.  Along with traditional photography, Joanne  specializes in alternative photography processes including infrared and 3D anaglyphs wearing the cyan/red lenses to bring the artwork to life.  Images with text and offbeat lifestyles are also extensively explored in Joanne’s photographs.  Her art has been exhibited extensively throughout California, theUnited States and Korea.” (http://www.joannechasemattillo.com/services.html)

Seeing With The Third Eye With Jay Patel

Jay Patel director of Shiiiva Design submitted stunning photographs and postcards

“Shiiiva’s identity was inspired by the Hindu God ‘Shiva’ known as ‘The Lord of all Creations’. The icon is well perceived for having a third eye which symbolises knowledge, concentration and imagination hence the three i’s in shiiiva; innovative inspirational ideas. In addition representing the creative eye of the designers themselves.

Much of the inspiration comes from travelling locally and around the world to incredible places such as India, New York, San Francisco and Bali to name a few. By exploring the diverse continents of Asia, America and Europe, the designer breeds from both traditional and contemporary surroundings which shows beautifully in his work” (https://www.facebook.com/pages/shiiiva/298604730157543?sk=info)

The Curious and Esoteric in Our Everyday Lives with Artist Mario Lautier Vella

Artist Mario Lautier Vella submitted a print of his piece ‘(I’m A ) Real Boy Now’

“Making art allows me to explore a long-held fascination with the presence of the curious and esoteric in our everyday lives – what occurs when the otherworldly or uncanny is encountered or evoked, and how these episodes are experienced, recorded and recalled.

Taking cues from personal experience and family history, dreams and stories of the spiritual and supernatural, my work explores ideas around presence and absence, invasion and evasion, protection, privacy, intimacy and the space between our public and private lives. The use of concealment, disguises, alter-egos, personas and multiples add a further layer of play, interpretation and intention to the work, allowing for new narratives and readings to emerge.

A cross-disciplinary artist, my practice incorporates drawing, painting, photography, video, sound, sculpture, installation, writing and performance. Regular teaching and talks also allow me to share my ideas and interests further.” (http://www.mariolautiervella.com/statement.html)

Away From the Rigid Constraints with Photographer Rob™

We received some beautiful prints from photographic artist Rob™ from his book ‘Speak my Language’ that was originally printed onto recycled newspaper.

“After leaving school, Rob studied graphic design before moving into a career in engineering, initially as a designer and subsequently as a certification specialist. A number of years ago, he picked up a camera again in order to break away from the rigid constraints and structure of the technical and back into something more creative.

Rob uses the camera to capture copies of the reality that plays out before him. That reality is often quite ordinary and is far from being a “grand” narrative; he infuses the everyday with a sense of otherness and melancholy. He observes rather than partakes, often looking towards the representation of boundaries and barriers, both physical and imagined. Whilst much of his work might appear to be landscape in nature, it is also deeply social, tackling the subject of man’s interactions with the landscape and also with others. He aims to cross the boundaries with his work.

Occasionally he even tries different things.

His work has been exhibited around the UK, and work is held in both public and private collections.

Aside from making his own photographic art, he is also a voracious consumer of photography, particularly in the form of the photobook, and especially those of a Japanese origin. The photobook as object is never really far from his thoughts. He is beginning to explore with writing too, through essays on photography, reviews of exhibitions, blogging, and of course, through Twitter.

If you are interested in purchasing prints, licensing rights or essays, would like to host an exhibition of work or have more general comments on this website or its contents, please use the contact form to get in touch”
